History of Campland on the Bay
Campland has been continuously operated by the same management team since affiliates of De Anza Group purchased the Campland lease in 1977. Management early-on committed to provide a family-oriented recreation and entertainment location on the water that’s safe, kid-friendly and close to everything guests could possibly need. Among the first projects undertaken in 1977 was to plant over 1,100 trees. Those small trees have grown to provide much-needed shade throughout the park. Over the years, Campland enlarged the swimming pool and spa facility and rebuilt the Marina. It also installed Huff n’ Puff Park, the Super Site (secluded, luxury-style camping), a basketball court, the Friendly Bowl Skateboard Park, its “Dogwood Park” dog park, the Central Park Stage, enclosed event space, the Market Mall Fountain, and significantly enhanced the landscaping, electrical, sewer and water systems throughout the park.
Over time, Campland’s has enhanced the Game Room, Cantina, Market, Front Desk and Marina. It also added free wi-fi throughout the park. As part of Campland’s on-going commitment to the environment, it updated to energy-efficient lighting, installed recycling containers throughout the resort, and taken other steps to tread lightly in the sensitive marine neighborhood it occupies.
Years ago, Terra Vista Management, Inc.’s President and CEO, Michael Gelfand began his career as Campland’s recreation department manager. He implemented year-round daily activities and events now managed by a staff of amazing recreation leaders. The Recreation Department spends thousands annually on crafts supplies, kick balls, flag-football flags, footballs, new activities, and just about anything else it can think of to give Campland’s guests the family-friendly fun they seek.
No history of Campland is complete without mentioning its friendly employees, several of whom have worked at Campland for over 30 years. Families return generation after generation to enjoy friendly service and playing and camping on the water at San Diego’s world-renowned Mission Bay, the world’s largest aquatic park. Staff members take pride in serving new and returning guests with fun and ahhoooutstanding experiences year after year. Campland’s history is so much more than its location. It is the culmination of the wonderful family experiences that its guests have enjoyed since 1969. At Campland, “Campland Raised” is not a slogan, it’s the truth!
